What is a Postpartum Doula?

Why hire a doula (and no it won’t replace your husband or partner!)

A postpartum doula provides assistance with breastfeeding and teaches you the various aspects of caring for a newborn (teaching you how to diaper, bathe, etc.). The doula also provides light cooking and help with cleaning in the kitchen. There are many benefits to hiring a postpartum doula including easier and less painful experience with latching, reduced chance for postpartum depression, less fatigue and an overall easier transition towards acclimating to your newest family addition.

POSTPARTUM DOULA SERVICES

BENEFITS: Easier and less painful experience with latching, reduced chance for postpartum depression, less fatigue, more satisfaction with the experience of being new parents. Coming home from the hospital can be quite overwhelming. Mom is often in a lot of pain, and extremely tired. Hiring a postpartum doula is just like having a close family member whose sole focus is making sure you are comfortable and acclimating to your new life with baby. A postpartum doula provides assistance with breastfeeding and newborn care, teaches you how to bathe and diaper your newborn, helps with light cooking, and cleaning around the kitchen and more. A doula can be invaluable for the whole family during the postpartum period. In the words of Kathrin Auger, a very dear colleague of mine, “Hiring a doula is theraputic, not therapy.”
